PM Mark Carney announces $4.3 billion in new aid for Ukraine

While meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday alongside the G7 Summit in Alberta, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced $4.3 billion in new aid to support Ukraine’s defense.

The Prime Minister’s Office stated that this amount includes $2 billion for weapons such as drones, ammunition, and armored vehicles – funds that Canada will count towards its NATO defense spending target.

Canada is also providing Ukraine with a $2.3 billion loan to help the war-torn country rebuild its infrastructure.

The Prime Minister’s Office said this loan would be repaid from the interest levied on frozen Russian assets in Europe.

Canada also announced a new package of sanctions targeting Russia’s “shadow fleet” and energy revenues.

Carney, who is hosting this year’s G7 Summit, had invited Zelenskyy to the meeting and has stated that Canada wants to make Ukraine’s defense a central part of the discussions.

G7 leaders were scheduled to have a working breakfast meeting on Tuesday to discuss ending Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Meeting with Zelenskyy on Tuesday morning, Carney condemned the latest round of Russian attacks “in the strongest terms.
