Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to make a significant announcement today at a lumber facility in Kelowna, B.C. His visit to the province comes amidst renewed tensions in the softwood lumber dispute with the United States. Yesterday, Carney toured a Canadian Forces facility on Vancouver Island, met with B.C. Premier David Eby, and officials from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. He also made a surprise appearance at the Vancouver Pride Parade.

During his tour, Carney took a jab at B.C. Ferries for its decision to purchase ferries from a Chinese shipyard. While looking through binoculars at the Canadian Navy’s facility on Vancouver Island, Carney quipped, “I see a ferry,” before quickly adding, “but not Chinese-made.”

This comment refers to B.C. Ferries’ recent acquisition of four ferries from a Chinese company, a decision that has drawn criticism from Premier David Eby and federal Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland. B.C. Ferries has defended the purchase, stating that the Chinese shipyard offered the best deal.

Carney’s visit to the naval facility was intended to highlight the government’s plan to rebuild and reinvest in the Canadian Armed Forces. He toured the Royal Canadian Navy vessel Sikanni and expressed his gratitude to the navy members serving on the West Coast.
