Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is set to travel to China alongside Prime Minister Mark Carney as part of a high-level diplomatic mission. The primary objective of this visit is to mitigate ongoing trade tensions between the two nations and to steer bilateral relations back toward a productive path. The mission comes at a critical time when international trade stability is paramount for the provincial economy.

Trade relations between Canada and China have faced significant challenges in recent months, with Saskatchewan bearing a substantial portion of the economic impact. The province suffered a major blow when China imposed heavy tariffs on Canadian canola products. This move was widely viewed as a retaliatory measure following Canada’s decision to implement a 100 percent tariff on Chinese-manufactured electric vehicles.

The trade dispute has expanded beyond the automotive and agricultural sectors. In response to Canadian restrictions on Chinese steel and aluminum, Beijing has retaliated by imposing duties on Canadian peas, pork, and various seafood products. These compounding barriers have created an urgent need for direct diplomatic engagement to protect Saskatchewan’s export-driven industries.

In a statement released on Monday, Premier Scott Moe emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong relationship between Canada, Saskatchewan, and China. He noted that these upcoming meetings will be instrumental in “recalibrating” the way the two countries conduct business, expressing optimism that a renewed dialogue can help resolve the current deadlock and secure the province’s economic interests abroad.
