The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has launched a nationwide strike, just hours after Procurement Minister Joel Lightbound announced that door-to-door mail delivery will be gradually eliminated for nearly all Canadian households over the next decade.

“In response to the government’s attack on our postal service and workers, all CUPW members at Canada Post are now on a nationwide strike, effective immediately,” the union said in a statement.

The strike is considered legal even without the usual notice because Canada Post workers have technically been engaged in strike-related actions for months. Since May, CUPW members have implemented measures like overtime bans and work-to-rule campaigns, which are recognized as strike or lockout actions.

These actions began after a back-to-work order from the Canada Industrial Relations Board, which had required workers to return under their old contract from last December until mid-May, expired. Earlier in May, CUPW issued a 72-hour strike notice and refused overtime work.

As a new collective agreement has not yet been finalized, the union remains in a legal strike position, even though a full strike has not been in effect during the past several months.
