The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has reported that a record 85 million metric tonnes of cargo moved through Canada’s largest port during the first six months of 2025, a 13% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
The biggest surge was seen in crude oil exports, which were almost five times higher than the first half of last year, largely due to the startup of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion in May 2024. About 60% of these crude oil exports went to China.
Exports of canola oil through the port also saw a significant jump, rising by 72% to 700,000 metric tonnes. This was attributed to a greater movement of goods to markets other than China and the United States.
The port’s four container terminals experienced a 6% increase in year-over-year volumes, while cruise ship passenger visits dropped by 9% after a record-setting year in 2024.
The Port of Vancouver is the fourth-largest port in North America by tonnage, handling nearly as much cargo as Canada’s next five largest ports combined. It facilitates trade with 170 countries, with more than 80% of the products moving through Vancouver destined for markets other than the United States.
