The City of Port Alberni has declared a state of local emergency in response to a rapidly spreading wildfire that has burned 16.2 square kilometers of forest. The blaze, located south of the Vancouver Island community, has triggered evacuation orders.

The fire, known as the Mount Underwood wildfire, has forced the closure of the main access road between Port Alberni and Bamfield. According to BC Hydro, hundreds of residents and businesses in Bamfield are now without power due to the fire.

In a bulletin released Wednesday morning, the BC Wildfire Service stated, “Bamfield has no power and limited services.” The service urged people to stay away from the area unless they are residents, to avoid putting additional pressure on the community.

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District has issued an evacuation order for the China Creek Campground and Marina, a site with approximately 250 campsites located about 15 kilometers southwest of Port Alberni.
