The BC Counter Human Trafficking Unit and Richmond RCMP carried out a joint operation on March 12, 2026, targeting individuals attempting to purchase sexual services.
The one-day initiative focused on people using online platforms to arrange such transactions. Undercover officers engaged with more than 100 individuals during the operation, which led to several arrests. All those arrested were later released as the investigation continues.
Police say operations like this aim to reduce demand for sexual services, raise awareness about the risks tied to exploitation, and strengthen community deterrence. While some sex work in British Columbia is independent and voluntary, officials say consumer demand can contribute to human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
Inspector Lyndsay O’Ruairc noted that purchasing sexual services is illegal in Canada and may result in criminal charges. She added that people seeking services online cannot be certain who they are communicating with, and their actions may contribute to harm.
Inspector Ed Yoshiyama said the operation reflects a focus on protecting vulnerable people and enforcing laws designed to improve community safety.
Police are encouraging the public to learn how to recognize and report signs of human trafficking through resources provided by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
