The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) is looking into a police-involved shooting in Burnaby that left a woman dead on Tuesday evening.

Burnaby RCMP say officers were called to a home near Oxford Street and Carleton Avenue around 8 p.m. after reports of a woman in distress who was believed to be armed. Shortly after arriving, officers discharged their firearms, fatally wounding the woman.

Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was harmed.

In the aftermath, several city blocks were closed, with road restrictions in place from Cambridge Street to Dundas Street, between Gilmore Avenue and North Carleton Avenue. Photos from the area showed police barricades outside the Burnaby Heights residence.

A nearby resident told CityNews that his wife heard gunfire just before 8 p.m. He described the neighbourhood as usually very safe and said the incident was unsettling, though he found the police response reassuring.

The IIO is asking anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to contact the office at 1-855-446-8477.

As B.C.’s civilian oversight agency, the IIO investigates all police-involved incidents that result in death or serious injury, regardless of whether police misconduct is alleged.
