Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying two suspects involved in an attempted robbery that unfolded earlier this year in the lobby of a Pitt Meadows, B.C., building.

Ridge Meadows RCMP say the incident stemmed from an online cellphone sale and serves as a reminder for people to be cautious—especially during the busy holiday shopping season.

“With the holidays upon us, we want the public to make informed choices to protect not only their belongings but also their personal safety,” Staff Sgt. Michelle Luca said in a statement. “Use designated safety zones or other well-lit public places during the day when meeting buyers or sellers.”

In this case, the seller had arranged to meet a buyer in the lobby of a Harris Road building on the evening of Oct. 10. Police say the buyer arrived with another man, and the pair attempted to steal the phone. A struggle ensued, ending with one suspect pepper-spraying the victim before both fled empty-handed.

On Monday, investigators released surveillance images and video of the suspects and asked anyone who can identify them to contact police.

One suspect is described as Black, about 5’8″ tall, with a medium build, short black hair, and a black moustache. He was wearing glasses, a dark toque, and a black pullover with white designs.

The second suspect is described as Black or Middle Eastern, approximately 6’1″ tall, with a slim build, short curly hair, and a thin moustache. He was last seen wearing a black jacket and track pants.

To stay safe when selling items online, police recommend telling someone where you’re going, bringing a friend, and meeting at a police station. The RCMP also advised sellers to “trust your instincts.”
