Police on Vancouver Island are warning residents about a text message scam targeting people over unpaid parking fines.
The Campbell River RCMP reported that in recent days, “multiple community members” received texts from someone claiming to be ICBC, notifying them of outstanding tickets. The messages threatened service suspension if the fines were not paid.
“These types of scams are becoming increasingly common, and many people fall victim to them,” said Const. Maury Tyre in an RCMP statement.
Tyre advised that if there is any doubt about the legitimacy of a text or email from a corporate organization, people should avoid interacting or sharing personal information.
The safest way to verify a message is a scam is to contact the company directly, without clicking any links provided by the sender. “Official contact numbers can be found on the back of your credit cards or on the company’s official website,” Tyre added.
