Allegations of sexual misconduct have been made against the owner and head coach of Zuma Martial Arts, a gym located in downtown Victoria, B.C., prompting a police investigation.

At least two women have come forward, accusing the coach of sexual harassment and assault. One woman stated that during her time at the gym, she was subjected to inappropriate comments about her appearance, unwanted physical contact, and intrusive questions about her sex life. Despite clearly expressing that she did not want any sexual touching, she says she was sexually assaulted and quit the gym the same day.

Another former student has also accused the coach of assault during a sparring session. Both women said they decided to speak out after hearing similar allegations from others, some of which surfaced in a Reddit post where one of the women, identified as Jane, shared her experience about two weeks ago.

Both women also claimed the coach offered to take photos of them. Jane said the offer came shortly after he showed her a photo of a naked woman.

In response, the gym’s leadership posted a statement on the front door and social media, saying they’ve spent the past week listening to painful testimonies. They announced that Magenta HR has been hired to conduct an independent review of the gym’s culture and assist in updating its code of conduct.

The Victoria Police Department has confirmed it is investigating and is urging anyone with relevant information or concerns to come forward.
