The Ridge Meadows RCMP continue to focus on repeat shoplifters who steal large quantities of merchandise from retailers, contributing to ongoing criminal activity and disorder in local communities.

“Project Anchor” is an ongoing enforcement initiative aimed at reducing retail theft in the Maple Ridge downtown core and improving overall community safety. Retail theft has remained a persistent issue in the area in recent months. Since September, officers with the RCMP’s Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) have been working closely with retailers, loss prevention teams, and partner agencies across the region to address these offences.

As part of the initiative, officers recently arrested four individuals at the same store within a one-hour period.

On November 17, 2025, CRU officers were assisting a loss prevention officer at a retail location when they were alerted to a suspect leaving the store with concealed merchandise. After stopping and arresting that individual, officers identified and arrested three additional suspects in separate theft incidents at the same store.

One suspect was arrested for attempting to steal approximately $650 worth of merchandise, while another was found with more than $750 in stolen meat products.

Some of the individuals were charged with theft and breach of bail conditions, while others were released with conditions prohibiting them from returning to the store. All individuals were offered referrals to social support services.

“This is not casual shoplifting, but repeat offenders openly stealing large volumes of merchandise from the same retailers,” said CRU Sgt. Joe Whalley. “This behaviour affects not only businesses but also the surrounding community, where stolen goods are often resold illegally, creating public health and safety risks. Our approach is focused on both accountability and connecting people with the supports they need.”

The Ridge Meadows RCMP say they will continue targeting retail theft as part of their broader commitment to crime reduction and community safety, in partnership with local businesses and municipal stakeholders.
