Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre stated at a press conference on Wednesday that temporary foreign workers are taking jobs from young Canadians, even as youth unemployment remains high. His comments come just days after the government released its mid-year immigration data.

On Monday, Poilievre took to social media, alleging that the government had exceeded its caps for temporary worker visas. He accused the government of being “out of control” on immigration.

Last year, for the first time, Canada placed limits on the number of temporary foreign workers it would admit, as the government worked to address a housing affordability crisis partly fueled by rapid population growth.

Federal data reveals that Canada aimed to issue 82,000 visas for temporary foreign workers this year but has already issued 105,000.

However, a spokeswoman for Immigration Minister Lena Diab offered a different perspective, noting a significant drop in the number of temporary foreign workers arriving in Canada during the first six months of the year. That number fell to 119,000 from over 245,000 in 2024.
