Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced financial assistance of 1,600 crore rupees for flood-hit Punjab. He assessed the damage caused by the floods in the state.
In his announcement, Modi said this aid is in addition to the 12,000 crore rupees the state has already received. He also announced an ex-gratia of 2 lakh rupees for the families of the deceased and 50,000 rupees for the seriously injured.
Earlier, he had reviewed the flood situation and conducted an aerial survey. After visiting Himachal Pradesh, Modi arrived in the Gurdaspur district, one of the most affected areas. There, he met with flood-affected people and teams from the NDRF and SDRF.
The Prime Minister stated that the second installment of the SDRF (State Disaster Response Fund) and PM Kisan Samman Nidhi would be released in advance. He emphasized the need for a multi-dimensional approach to help the entire region and its people recover. This will include measures such as rebuilding homes under the PM Awas Yojana, repairing national highways, reconstructing schools, providing relief through the PM National Relief Fund, and distributing mini-kits for livestock.
Modi expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the natural calamity and said that the central government will work closely with the state governments in this difficult time and provide all possible assistance.
Punjab is currently facing one of its worst floods in decades. Heavy rain in the catchment areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir has caused the water levels in the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers to rise. Additionally, heavy rains in Punjab in recent days have aggravated the flooding situation. The death toll from the devastating floods in Punjab has reached 51, while crops on 4.5 lakh acres of land have been damaged.
