Prime Minister Mark Carney has issued a definitive statement regarding Canada’s stance on the escalating Middle East conflict, declaring, “Canada is not involved in the Iran war, and it never will be.” Facing mounting criticism over the past several days, Carney adjusted his schedule yesterday to personally attend Question Period and clarify the nation’s foreign policy to Members of Parliament.
During the session, the Prime Minister emphasized that Canada is not participating in the military strikes led by the United States and Israel against Iran. However, he reiterated that Canada’s objectives remain clear: ensuring the cessation of Iran’s nuclear program and curbing the “export of terrorism” from the region.
In a surprising turn during the debate, the Conservative opposition focused very little on the war itself. Instead, they directed their questioning toward domestic concerns, including public safety, inflation, and the ongoing affordability crisis. This shift in focus allowed the government to maintain its stance on international neutrality while facing pressure on internal economic issues.
Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet took a sharper tone, sarcastically comparing the Prime Minister to “Marco Polo” for his frequent international travels. Blanchet demanded that Carney provide Parliament with a more concrete vision for the Middle East. When asked if Canada had coordinated a unified position with European allies, Carney noted that he has been in communication with all G7 leaders, U.S. President Donald Trump, and French President Emmanuel Macron, expressing optimism that a diplomatic path to de-escalate tensions will soon be found.
