Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the world must intensify pressure on Moscow to end its war on Ukraine after Russian drones violated NATO airspace overnight.
Poland reported that multiple Russian drones entered its territory over several hours and were shot down with the help of NATO allies. In response, Poland has initiated a formal consultation with the military alliance.
Carney said that Canada is “closely coordinating” with NATO allies and Poland. On social media, he stressed that “we must increase the pressure” on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war and agree to lasting peace.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said that Canada stands in solidarity with Poland and Ukraine, calling the incident “another horrendous example of Putin’s refusal to seek peace.”
The Polish military described the incursion as an “act of aggression.” However, Moscow claims it did not target Poland, and its close ally, Belarus, suggested that some drones “lost their course” due to network jamming.
