The nationwide recall of pistachios and pistachio-containing products linked to an ongoing salmonella outbreak has expanded to include 314 items.
The most recent recalled products were sold in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, Nova Scotia, and B.C., according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Consumers are advised to check if they have any of the recalled products and, if so, not to consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute them. The CFIA recommends discarding the products or returning them to the point of purchase and contacting a health-care provider if they suspect illness from consumption.
Retail and food service businesses that may have the affected products include grocery and convenience stores, bakeries, chocolatiers, ice cream shops, hotels, restaurants, institutional food services, and other businesses that use pistachios as an ingredient.
As of December 30, the Public Health Agency of Canada reports 155 cases of salmonella linked to the outbreak, including 24 hospitalizations: 77 cases in Quebec, 58 in Ontario, nine in B.C., seven in Alberta, three in Manitoba, and one in New Brunswick. Symptoms of salmonella infection can include chills, fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Symptoms typically appear within six to 72 hours after exposure and usually resolve within four to seven days.
The initial national recall was issued in July for Habibi brand Pistachio Kernels. The CFIA confirmed that the pistachios involved in the current recalls were imported from Iran.
To reduce the risk of salmonella contamination, the CFIA has implemented temporary measures, including a temporary ban and updated license conditions for businesses that import Iranian pistachios or use them in Canadian products.
The CFIA’s investigation is ongoing, and consumers are advised to stay updated on additional products that may be recalled.
