Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre secured his return to the House of Commons late Monday night with a commanding by-election victory in the rural Alberta riding of Battle River—Crowfoot.

As results came in throughout the night, he led with approximately 80% of the vote. A record 214 people ran in the riding, most of whom were part of a protest movement called the Longest Ballot Committee, which is pushing for electoral reform to replace the first-past-the-post system.

“Getting to know the people in this region has been the privilege of my life,” Poilievre said during a victory party in Camrose.

This was a grassroots campaign similar to the one he ran in 2004 when he was first elected as an MP in the Ontario riding of Carleton. In contrast, during the federal election in the spring, he was unable to run a similar local campaign in Carleton because his leader’s tour took him across the country for 36 days. Poilievre, who had served as the MP for Carleton seven consecutive times, lost to Liberal leader Bruce Fanjoy in April.

Observers had considered Poilievre’s return to the House of Commons all but guaranteed, as this riding is one of the safest Conservative seats in the country.

When Parliament resumes on September 15, Poilievre will face Prime Minister Mark Carney in the House of Commons for the first time. Carney congratulated Poilievre in a social media post on Tuesday morning.

This fall, the Conservative leader will need to keep his supporters close, as he faces a mandatory leadership review early next year.
