Commuters traveling between Surrey and New Westminster are being advised to prepare for significant disruptions as the Pattullo Bridge is scheduled to close to all traffic for approximately one week, starting tonight, Friday, at 8 p.m.
The temporary closure is necessary to allow construction crews to connect existing roadways to the newly constructed Riverview Bridge. During this period, workers will focus on finalizing road connections and completing other essential infrastructure tasks required for the transition to the new crossing.
Drivers are being urged to plan ahead and utilize alternative routes, such as the Port Mann or Alex Fraser bridges, to avoid delays. The closure is expected to last roughly seven days, impacting both daytime and nighttime travel across the Fraser River.
Local business owners in New Westminster have expressed concern regarding the impact of the week-long closure on foot traffic and commerce. While many fear a temporary downturn in sales, there is a general sense of optimism regarding the long-term benefits of the project. Business representatives noted that while the construction is a hurdle, the end result—a modern and more efficient bridge—is a welcome development for the city.
However, stakeholders are also warning that further challenges lie ahead. Additional disruptions are anticipated in the coming months, particularly once work begins on the demolition of the old Pattullo Bridge. For now, the focus remains on the upcoming week of intensive roadwork and the successful integration of the new span.
