Parents must verify sex at birth for students joining girls’ sports in Edmonton Public Schools

Starting this fall, students trying out for female sports teams in Edmonton Public Schools will need parental confirmation that they were assigned female at birth.

The change follows the Fairness and Safety in Sport Act, which took effect on Sept. 1 and bans transgender athletes from competing in amateur female divisions.

Edmonton Public Schools confirmed to CBC News that parents will receive a form to complete before their child can join a female-only team. The form requires parents to verify their child was assigned female at birth and acknowledges that students cannot participate without this written confirmation.

The policy applies to students 12 and older and does not affect participation in physical education classes. Under the rules, every student registering for a female-only team must submit written confirmation. If a student’s eligibility is formally challenged and the challenge is deemed valid, the family will be required to provide a birth certificate. Complaints must also be reported to the province.
