Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says more than 26,000 Canadians currently in Mexico have registered with the federal government for safety updates, including over 8,000 who contacted Global Affairs Canada in the past day alone.
The surge in registrations followed widespread violence in several Mexican regions after authorities reportedly killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes — known as “El Mencho” — the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Mexican officials said surveillance of a romantic partner helped security forces track him down. He was captured and killed Sunday during a major operation that left more than 70 people dead, including security personnel, suspected cartel members and others.
Violence spread across multiple states in the aftermath, prompting the deployment of the Mexican army and National Guard to restore order.
Anand said Canada’s online registration system experienced technical issues amid the spike in demand but is now functioning properly. She added that Ottawa is not currently planning evacuation flights and has not received a request from Mexico for assistance, including military support.
Global Affairs Canada has updated its travel advisory, urging Canadians in affected areas to exercise a high degree of caution and follow local authorities’ guidance. Some Canadian airlines have also delayed or cancelled flights due to security concerns.
