Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced that he aims to resolve the problems at the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) within 100 days.
In a letter to the chair of the Parliament’s finance committee, Champagne stated that it is clear the CRA is not meeting Canadians’ standards, citing numerous complaints about service delays at the agency’s call centers.
He has instructed the CRA to take concrete steps to address these issues, which may include reallocating or adding personnel and expanding digital options for Canadians.
This initiative comes as Ottawa plans significant spending cuts in the public service over the next few years. The Union of Taxation Employees has warned that more than 3,000 jobs have been lost at the CRA since last May, and services will worsen if the planned cuts proceed.
Champagne and other tax agency officials are scheduled to appear before the finance committee to provide an update to Parliamentarians on the progress of getting the CRA back on track.
