The federal government will invest nearly $4 billion to construct thousands of new housing units for members of the Canadian Armed Forces, Defence Minister David McGuinty announced today, calling the expansion urgently needed.
The funding will support the construction of 6,000 new units across 25 communities where the Armed Forces operate, in addition to 800 units already under development.
A report released last year by the Office of the Auditor General of Canada found that many military housing units are aging, in poor condition and in short supply at several bases nationwide.
Among the bases set to receive new housing, CFB Gagetown will add 500 units, while Kingston is slated for 900. More than 1,000 units each are planned for CFB Valcartier, CFB Petawawa and Edmonton.
McGuinty said improving housing will also support military recruitment, noting enlistment has risen 13 per cent over the past eight months.
