Newly released government documents provide a detailed breakdown of the more than $6.7 million spent by federal agencies on the cull of over 300 ostriches at Universal Ostrich Farm in B.C. last November.
A report by CTV News states that the CFIA reported spending $220,923 on straw and its delivery, likely used to construct the cull enclosure, according to photos taken on Nov. 6, and $13,780 on ostrich feed. The agency also listed $44,248 in legal costs, separate from those incurred by the Department of Justice.
The RCMP accounted for its expenses from Feb. 20, the “first transaction date,” to Dec. 9, when Conservative MP Scott Anderson requested a cost breakdown. The force spent $2,016,566 on personnel, about $1 million on transportation and telecommunications, $657,037 on professional and special services, $59,210 on rentals and leases, $16,866 on repairs and maintenance, and $210 on utilities, materials, and supplies.
The Department of Justice’s $1.3-million bill was not itemized, with the agency stating only that it covered total legal costs associated with the ostrich farm case.
This detailed accounting highlights the extensive resources federal agencies dedicated to the contentious avian flu-related cull, which attracted international attention and public protests.
