A Harry Potter-themed event scheduled to open in Vancouver’s Stanley Park next month is facing growing calls for cancellation. Critics are citing author J.K. Rowling’s past comments on transgender rights as the reason for their opposition.

The event, titled “Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience,” is set to open on November 7, with tickets going on sale today. The outdoor attraction promises an immersive walk through a magical forest inspired by Rowling’s universe.

However, at least two city councilors are urging the Vancouver Park Board to withdraw its support, arguing that the author’s views conflict with the city’s commitment to inclusion.

Lucy Maloney, a Vancouver City Councilor from OneCity, expressed her disappointment. “I feel it’s really regrettable that we’re allowing one of the world’s most high-profile transphobes to actually make money in the City of Vancouver,” she said.

Rowling has consistently denied that her views are transphobic, but she has made public statements opposing the legal right for individuals to self-identify their gender.
