Ontario Premier Doug Ford says his government will introduce legislation to ban testing on dogs and cats. The move comes after whistleblowers revealed that dogs were being used in cardiac research at the Lawson Research Institute, part of St. Joseph’s Health Care in London. Ford said the legislation will be straightforward.

The whistleblowers’ concerns prompted a University of Toronto investigation, which confirmed that dogs had been used in experiments and euthanized before their organs were removed for further study. Following the revelations, the Lawson Research Institute has ended all research involving dogs.

Ford says the upcoming legislation, to be introduced at Queen’s Park, will ensure such practices are no longer allowed in Ontario.
