Premier Doug Ford says a deadly home invasion in Vaughan that claimed the life of a father of four is yet another example of the “sickening” rise in violent crime across Ontario, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area.

Speaking at an unrelated news conference in Kitchener on Tuesday, Ford called the shooting “heart-wrenching.” The incident took place around 1 a.m. Sunday at a home near Andreeta Drive and Barons Street.

“This innocent man had his door kicked in during the night… his kids were there, his wife was there. The suspects pointed a gun at one of his children. He tried to protect his family, and they shot him dead right in front of them,” Ford said.

York Regional Police have identified the victim as 46-year-old Abdul Aleem Farooqi. Investigators say three suspects are wanted in connection with the attack, but no descriptions have been released.

Ford said he has spoken with York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween and federal officials, reiterating his criticism of Canada’s bail system. “We are sick and tired of these thugs getting out on bail,” he said. “When they catch these guys, I’ll almost guarantee they were already out on bail for another heinous crime. It’s absolutely sickening. It’s worse than U.S. cities.”

Toronto Police data shows there have been 1,857 robberies so far in 2025—a more than 12 per cent drop compared to the same period in 2024—but Ford insists carjackings and home invasions are now happening “multiple times a day” and “every single night” across the region.

He also referenced a case in Lindsay, Ont., where a man was charged with aggravated assault after allegedly injuring an intruder who had broken into his home overnight, arguing that Ontarians should not be punished for defending themselves.
