Ontario police have dropped all charges against one of three Sikh activists arrested in September for allegedly having a loaded handgun in a vehicle.

Inderjit Singh Gosal of Brampton, Jagdeep Singh of New York, and Arman Singh were arrested on Sept. 19 in Whitby and charged with multiple firearms offences, including careless use and illegal possession of a prohibited handgun.

Gosal is a well-known figure in Canada’s Khalistani movement and became the leader of Sikhs for Justice in Canada after the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Jagdeep Singh said he was notified Thursday by his lawyer that the Ontario Provincial Police had withdrawn the charges against him.

Gosal, without discussing details of the still-active case, told CBC News the charges against him and the others should be viewed in light of threats to his life. He was already the apparent target of a drive-by shooting in Brampton in February 2024, and police warned him repeatedly in August and September that he was in danger.

Sikhs for Justice has been organizing global Sikh diaspora referendums on creating an independent Khalistan. India considers these votes a challenge to its sovereignty and has labelled the group’s leaders as terrorists. Canada, meanwhile, has accused India of ordering Nijjar’s assassination—an allegation India denies. Four men linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang have been charged in the killing.

Jagdeep Singh said he plans to stay in Canada and participate in the next Khalistani referendum in Ottawa on Sunday. Previous voting rounds in Surrey, the GTA, and several countries worldwide have drawn large turnouts.

Gosal, currently out on bail, is also expected to attend the Ottawa referendum, and says lawyers anticipate the remaining charges against the third man, Arman Singh, will also be dropped.
