Jarmanpreet Singh, on only his second day working as a taxi driver, was stabbed multiple times while driving in downtown Kelowna.

According to Roy Paulson, a Kelowna Cabs employee and spokesperson for the taxi industry, the attack occurred shortly after midnight on September 2.

“He had picked up two passengers downtown, whose fare was paid by someone on the street with a $100 bill for what was supposed to be a $10 ride,” Paulson explained. Singh only had $75 in change, but the person who paid reportedly took the change and placed the passengers in the cab without issue.

Paulson said an altercation broke out inside the cab when the passengers attempted to take the $100, but they eventually jumped out of the vehicle.

Singh reported the incident to dispatch and returned downtown, where he was allegedly confronted on Water Street and Bernard Avenue by two people banging on his window, demanding the $100. “They opened his door and stabbed him in the arm and leg with a large knife,” Paulson said.

Kelowna RCMP are investigating, and an arrest has been made in connection with the assault.

“Investigators are asking any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police to contact the Kelowna RCMP non-emergency line at 250-762-3300, referencing file #2025-52851,” said Cpl. Allison Konsmo.

Singh was hospitalized, received over 30 stitches, and is currently awaiting surgery.
