A New Westminster councillor is advocating for more provincial regulations on vape shops, arguing for restrictions on their location and number within a given area.

Councillor Daniel Fontaine stated that he’s seeing a proliferation of vape shops in retail spaces across the city and the Lower Mainland. He believes that the province needs to step in, as municipalities currently have limited authority to impose restrictions.

“They ask for a business license, and we have very little we can impose on it,” Fontaine said. He added that a lack of consistent rules across the 21 different municipalities in the Lower Mainland means one city might have zoning restrictions while a neighboring one does not.

Fontaine’s proposal will be debated at the Union of B.C. Municipalities Convention, and if it gains endorsement, it will be forwarded to the provincial government for consideration.
