After years of construction, logistical delays, and a series of partial openings, Metro Vancouver’s newest river crossing is set to fully open to traffic this weekend. The stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge, also known as the Riverview Bridge, will officially open all four lanes at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14.
Built to replace the aging Pattullo Bridge connecting Surrey and New Westminster, the new infrastructure is expected to significantly ease congestion in the region. Fraser Crossing Partners, the consortium behind the project, confirmed that motorists will be able to access the bridge via McBride Boulevard and the new Royal Avenue on-ramp in New Westminster, and through King George Boulevard in Surrey.
TransLink, which has operated the Pattullo Bridge for decades, announced that the old span is now permanently closed to all vehicular traffic. However, the sidewalk on the original bridge will remain accessible for cyclists and pedestrians until the morning of Feb. 17, providing a brief transition period for non-motorized commuters.
The B.C. Ministry of Transportation stated that the new crossing will deliver a much-needed upgrade to the road network, improving safety and reliability for residents on both sides of the Fraser River. The total estimated cost for the massive infrastructure project is approximately $1.6 billion.
