The British Columbia government is expanding police training at the Justice Institute of B.C. (JIBC) by 50%, increasing class sizes from 64 to 96 recruits and annual training capacity from 192 to 288 officers. The $4-million investment, announced in Budget 2025, will fund more instructors, new training equipment, and additional space.
Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger said the move will strengthen local police recruitment and community safety. JIBC president Len Goerke added that the expansion reflects the province’s confidence in the institute’s role in training well-prepared officers.
The JIBC police academy provides 25-week basic training for municipal, transit, and tribal police recruits, as well as advanced courses for serving officers.
The initiative is part of B.C.’s wider $235-million public safety plan to address crime and its root causes through enhanced mental-health services, supportive housing, and improved justice-system access.
