More than 12 million Canadians who receive the GST credit are set to receive a one-time “top-up” payment this spring. The rollout follows the swift passage of new legislation by Members of Parliament designed to ease the rising cost of living.
The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit has officially received Royal Assent. This final step comes after the bill passed a crucial vote in the Senate yesterday and cleared the House of Commons last week. The federal government prioritized the legislation to ensure funds could be distributed as quickly as possible.
According to the Department of Finance, the one-time payment will be equivalent to 50% of the recipient’s current credit amount. These funds are expected to be issued during the spring season. In addition to this immediate boost, the regular benefit amount for low- and middle-income Canadians will see a 25% permanent increase starting in July, sustained over the next five years.
Government estimates suggest that these combined measures will provide significant relief to families across the country. A family of four can expect to receive up to $1,890 this year, with annual payments of approximately $1,400 over the subsequent four years.
