The NDP announced that New Democrats will choose their next leader in March, following a seven-month campaign.

NDP President Mary Shortall stated, “This is a crucial first step in what will be an important opportunity for New Democrats to come together, rebuild, and elect our new leader.”

A news release from the party confirms the campaign will officially begin in September, with voting to conclude “no later than March 29.” This date coincides with the NDP national convention in Winnipeg.

The party’s federal council met on Thursday to establish some of the rules for the leadership contest, which will include a $100,000 entry fee. The complete guidelines for the race are still being finalized and will require further discussion at an upcoming meeting. The last time the New Democrats held a leadership contest, the entry fee was $30,000, and the race extended for over a year. Political observers like Davies had anticipated a fee in the range of $50,000 to $75,000.

The incoming leader will face the challenging task of rebuilding the party after its worst-ever electoral performance. In April’s election, the NDP went into the campaign with 24 Members of Parliament but secured only seven seats. The party lost incumbents in traditional strongholds like Hamilton and Windsor, Ontario.

Former leader Jagmeet Singh announced his resignation on election night after he failed to win his own seat.
