Voting has officially commenced for the selection of the new leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP). According to party officials, approximately 100,000 members are eligible to cast their ballots in a race that will define the party’s future direction. The deadline for voting has been set for March 28.
Five candidates are vying for the leadership: union leader Rob Ashton, social worker Tanille Johnston, filmmaker Avi Lewis, Alberta Member of Parliament Heather McPherson, and Tony McQuail. Each candidate represents a different wing of the party, as they look to fill the void left by Jagmeet Singh.
Recent financial disclosures reveal a significant gap in fundraising among the frontrunners. Avi Lewis currently leads the pack, having raised approximately $724,000 in the final three months of 2025. Heather McPherson follows in second place, securing $316,000 in donations during the same period.
The results of the election will be announced on March 29 during the party’s annual convention in Winnipeg. With the eyes of the country on the race, the winner will take the helm of a party seeking to reassert its influence on the federal stage.
