Natural Resources Canada says it will cut about 400 jobs over the next four years as part of the federal government’s plan to reduce spending by $60 billion.
The department confirmed that roughly 700 permanent employees received letters this month warning that their positions could be affected by future changes. NRCan expects to eliminate approximately 400 positions by the 2028–29 fiscal year, though it says most affected workers are expected to leave through voluntary options such as transfers within the public service, early retirement or voluntary departure, rather than layoffs.
The job reductions follow the 2025 federal budget, which requires NRCan to find nearly $1.9 billion in savings over four years. The budget also calls for the end of the 2 Billion Trees program and the phase-out of initiatives such as the Canada Greener Homes Grant. To meet savings targets, NRCan plans to streamline operations, reduce management layers and adopt new technologies, including artificial intelligence.
Federal unions report that hundreds of their members at NRCan have received notices that their jobs may be impacted. As of March 2025, the department employed just over 6,000 people.
The cuts at NRCan are part of a broader federal effort to shrink the public service by 40,000 positions by 2028–29 through job cuts, attrition and early retirements. Several other federal departments have also begun notifying employees as the workforce adjustment process moves forward.
