Nanaimo City Council has voted to defer a motion that would have formally requested the local health authority to close an overdose prevention site located next to City Hall.

The deferral motion, brought forward by Councillor Ian Thorpe, passed with a 6-3 vote in favor during a special council meeting last night. Had the motion not been deferred and instead passed by council, it would have led to the city, with a population of over 100,000 on Vancouver Island, officially asking Island Health to close the site.

Concerns regarding violence and disorder emanating from the site had previously prompted municipal staff to propose the construction of a fence to protect individuals at City Hall. However, the council ultimately decided against this measure earlier this month.
