Staff at the City of Nanaimo are recommending the installation of a fence around city hall, citing the need to protect employees from violence and disorder originating from a nearby overdose prevention site.
A staff report, set to be presented to council this week, estimates the fence would cost $412,000. The report details numerous instances of intimidation and harassment directed at city employees, particularly those working early mornings or late at night.
The report highlights ongoing issues stemming from the city hall’s proximity to the overdose prevention site. These concerns include large gatherings of people, open-air drug use, fires, human waste, graffiti, and arrests related to weapons and drug trafficking.
Mayor Leonard Krog emphasized the city’s responsibility to ensure the safety of its employees, acknowledging that the situation around city hall has become increasingly challenging in recent years.
