Several regions of British Columbia recorded the hottest June 8 on record this Sunday, with some areas breaking temperature records that were over 70 years old.
According to Environment Canada, 12 daily heat records were set on Sunday. The early-season heat wave pushed temperatures across much of the province to between 30°C and 39°C.
Williams Lake, Whistler, Squamish, Princeton, Clinton, Kamloops, Pitt Meadows, Pemberton, Lytton, and Abbotsford areas surpassed the 30°C mark.
Lytton recorded a high of 39°C, Pemberton reached 36°C, Abbotsford hit 31°C, breaking its previous record of 30°C set in 1955 and Pitt Meadows also reached 31°C, surpassing a heat record set back in 1903.
Environment Canada had already issued a warning on Friday about an “early season heat event,” forecasting a sharp rise in temperatures across southern B.C. More than 20 special weather statements were released throughout the province.
As weather outlook for the week ahead, the heat is expected to continue through Monday. From Tuesday onward, temperatures are expected to ease in Lower Mainland and Southern Vancouver Island.
However, Howe Sound, Whistler, Pemberton, and inland parts of Vancouver Island are likely to continue experiencing higher temperatures later into the week.
