Tamara Jansen, Member of Parliament for Cloverdale-Langley City, has introduced a private member’s bill concerning Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) and mental illness.

On June 20, she presented Bill C-218 in Parliament. This legislation seeks to amend the Criminal Code to block the Liberal government’s planned expansion in 2027 of access to MAID for individuals whose sole underlying condition is a mental illness.

The bill, named the Right to Recover Act, is scheduled for its second reading in November.

Jansen emphasized the significant importance of this issue, stating it should concern every Canadian. She highlighted that vulnerable people with mental health issues often face long delays and lack access to support when seeking help, yet could be offered MAID instead.

She argued that MAID for mental illness does not protect vulnerable individuals; instead, she believes it “targets” them. “That’s where Canada is headed in 2027 if we don’t change course,” Jansen warned. “That’s why I’ve introduced Bill C-218. This would make it illegal to offer Medical Assistance in Dying to someone whose sole medical condition is a mental illness.”
