MP Heather McPherson announced yesterday afternoon in Edmonton that she is running for the leadership of the federal New Democratic Party (NDP).
In her speech, she promised to make the NDP “a viable choice again.” McPherson stated, “They turn politics into an ‘us versus them,’ a rural versus urban, workers versus the environment. This is not my vision for the New Democratic Party. We do not grow by pushing people out, we grow by bringing people together.”
McPherson said she hopes the NDP will change how it presents its message. She also called Prime Minister Mark Carney a “Conservative leader in a Liberal costume” and warned that the next election could be held as early as this spring.
Filmmaker and journalist Avi Lewis also announced his candidacy earlier this month. The NDP will choose its next leader at a convention in Winnipeg this coming March.
