A Montreal mother facing charges of child abandonment has been declared not criminally responsible.

The decision was made Monday at the Valleyfield courthouse following a psychiatric assessment of the 34-year-old woman, whose name remains under a publication ban to protect her toddler’s identity.

On June 18, police found the woman’s three-year-old daughter alive and conscious in a field near a highway in Ontario, four days after the child was reported missing by her mother in Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec, sparking a major police search. The mother was subsequently arrested and charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm and unlawful abandonment of a child.
