In another setback for John Rustad’s leadership, the MLA for Penticton-Summerland, Amelia Boultbee, has left the BC Conservative caucus.

Speaking to reporters outside the B.C. Legislature on Monday, Boultbee announced she would sit as an independent, citing disappointment with Rustad’s leadership.

Her departure follows that of Elenore Sturko, who was expelled from the party in late September amid allegations that she was organizing against Rustad during a leadership review process.

The review was overshadowed by a fake membership scandal, and tensions have since grown within the party after reports that Rustad ordered searches of members’ cellphones to find a suspected leak.

Boultbee said her decision came after Rustad told her that if she didn’t like his leadership, she should “get the F out.”

She becomes the fifth MLA to leave the party due to disputes with Rustad.

Boultbee emphasized that her resignation was not over policy differences but rather over issues of integrity connected to the membership controversy. She also accused Rustad of having a “track record” of pushing women out of the caucus, saying he has “kicked out, driven out, or fired” several female members.

Calling on Rustad to resign, Boultbee said she plans to work with Sturko and might consider rejoining the party if Rustad is removed from leadership.
