Brennan Day, MLA for Courtenay-Comox and Opposition Critic for Rural and Seniors’ Health, is calling for systemic reform within the healthcare system after the provincial government reversed its decision and committed to reinstating Brineura treatment for 10-year-old Charlie Pollock.

“Today is a victory for Charlie, his family, and every British Columbian who stood up for Charlie and demanded better,” Day stated. “It is a testament to the power of public pressure, expert advocacy, and a community that made the impossible, possible.”

Day highlighted that the need for public fundraising campaigns, media pressure, and a week of uncertainty demonstrated a deeply fractured system. “We should never have reached this point. ‘GoFundMe healthcare’ is a symptom of a broken healthcare system and governance out of touch,” he emphasized. “The government made the right decision, but only after being pushed to the brink by public outrage and media scrutiny.”

“This also exposed a system that only responds when an issue makes headlines, and families go public,” Day added.

Day and the Conservative Caucus are demanding a formal review of the Ministry’s rare drug access framework. They are also advocating for mandatory consultation with global experts before final decisions are made on such cases.
