Mounties in Mission say they are investigating two apparent attempted abductions reported this week.

In the first case, which happened between 11 p.m. Sunday and 1 a.m. Monday, a woman was walking along Logan Avenue when a white SUV pulled up beside her, according to Mission RCMP. Police say the driver, described as a South Asian man, asked her to perform a sexual act. When she refused and walked away, the man got out of the vehicle and assaulted her, trying to pull her toward the SUV. The woman managed to escape, but police say the suspect followed her in his vehicle and apparently sprayed her with bear spray.

The second incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. Monday. RCMP say a woman approached a bystander on Third Avenue between Murray and Horne streets, saying a South Asian man in a white SUV had asked her to perform a sexual act and then tried to drag her toward his vehicle. She was able to get away without serious injuries but left the area before speaking with police, and officers have not yet been able to contact her.

Police say both women are from vulnerable sectors of the community, though it is not yet clear whether they were targeted because of this.

Mission RCMP are asking the public to watch for a white SUV driven by a South Asian man with short hair, a beard, and tattoos on his arms, described as about six feet tall. Police say it is not known whether the suspect is from Mission and that he may be from another community or have targeted someone elsewhere.

RCMP are also urging social service providers who work with vulnerable populations to inform their clients about the incidents and encourage anyone with similar experiences to report them to police.
