Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Nina Krieger says lowering the threshold for laying charges would not result in more convictions. “Instead, it would only allow for weaker cases to be brought before the Crown.”

In a conversation on RED FM’s Harjinder Thind Show about the B.C. government’s new 40-member task force to combat extortion, Krieger stated emphasized that the threat of extortion is currently very serious, especially for the South Asian community. She explained that the new task force will bring officers from multiple law enforcement agencies under one roof, which will increase coordination in investigations and allow for faster sharing of information.

Assistant Commissioner John Brewer, who also participated in the interview, was asked what the new single command structure for the 40-member multi-agency task force would achieve that was not possible before.

Brewer replied that bringing them under a single command structure ensures all resources and information are shared without delay. This will break down existing barriers between jurisdictions, allowing teams to work more quickly and effectively.

When asked how the province’s $200,000 grant from the Gun and Gang Violence Action Fund for municipal police departments would be used on the ground, he stated that a joint management team would oversee its distribution and use.
