Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc met with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Tuesday morning in what his office described as a “constructive and lengthy” discussion. The meeting, originally scheduled for one hour, ran for more than 90 minutes.

Also in attendance were Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., Kirsten Hillman, and Marc-André Blanchard, chief of staff to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The talks took place just days after Carney announced that Canada would roll back some of its counter-tariffs on U.S. goods. The move is part of efforts to ease a prolonged trade dispute, during which Washington imposed a 35 per cent tariff on Canadian exports outside the countries’ free-trade agreement. Both sides continue to maintain tariffs on steel, aluminum, copper, and automobiles.

Carney has said the aim is to deepen negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump toward a broader economic and security agreement, adding that Trump assured him lifting certain countermeasures would help restart those talks.

LeBlanc has made several visits to Washington in recent months, including one in late July. At the time, he stressed that the government’s priority was securing the best possible deal for Canada, rather than meeting the previously suggested August 1 deadline.
