While Premier David Eby prepares for a taxpayer-funded trip to India to meet with business leaders and India’s High Commissioner, critics say families and businesses in Surrey continue to live in fear of extortion and violence by India-linked criminal groups.

McCallum argue that instead of hosting CEOs, the government should prioritize addressing the threats posed by alleged extortionists operating in the city. “If Premier Eby is eager to travel to India, he should send suspected and charged individuals linked to the extortion network back to New Delhi ,Surrey residents shouldn’t have to bear the consequences while their Premier focuses on photo-ops and trade missions.”

Surrey has seen a rise in threats, extortion, and shootings targeting the South Asian community, with shop owners reportedly paying “protection” money to overseas-directed criminal groups. Critics say Eby’s focus on international trade does little to address the immediate safety concerns of British Columbians, and call for decisive action, including deporting alleged criminals, to restore security.

“Real leadership means protecting residents first,” the statement said. “Deport the criminals. Stop treating Surrey as a backdrop for global diplomacy.”
