Mayor Locke tells SPS chief to immediately notify her of any significant policing incident in Surrey

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke has sent a stern letter to Surrey Police Service Chief Constable Norm Lipinski, outlining her demands and expectations. “I would appreciate your support in strengthening the flow of communication between us,” she told the Chief.

To achieve this, Locke wants to hold twice-monthly face-to-face meetings between herself and Lipinski. She further wrote, “Secondly, I request that you provide me with a comprehensive monthly crime statistics report, which we will use for discussion at the first meeting of each month. A consistent, data-driven review will help me speak with confidence to our residents about trends, challenges, and the progress your team is making.”

“Finally, and most importantly,” Locke wrote, “I expect to be immediately informed by telephone whenever a significant police incident occurs. Whether it is a major crime, a high-profile investigation, or a matter that may attract media attention—getting timely notice will allow me, on behalf of the City, to respond quickly and in a unified manner.”

Surrey Police Board Chairman Harley Chappell has responded to Mayor Locke’s letter in a positive manner.
