Mounties say a 21-year-old man was hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after being stabbed during a weekend carjacking in Nanaimo.

Police later arrested a 26-year-old man and three youth suspects after locating the stolen vehicle.

The assault and theft happened at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Sunday in the parking lot of an apartment building in the 6400 block of Portsmouth Road. The victim told investigators he was standing next to his vehicle when he was approached by the suspects.

The Nanaimo RCMP said in a statement that “an altercation occurred, which resulted in the victim being stabbed,” and the suspects then fled in his vehicle.

After obtaining a description of the suspects and the vehicle, police were able to locate them about an hour later. “All four occupants—three youths and one adult—were arrested and transported to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment,” police said.

Two of the youths have been released from custody with conditions and are awaiting court appearances. The other two suspects—the 26-year-old man and a 16-year-old—remain in police custody and are scheduled to appear in Nanaimo Provincial Court later this week.
